atwells avenue

Tradition and innovation combine in this unique triumphal arch featuring a suspended pignoli pine cone, a traditional Italian symbol of hospitality.  Gateway to the famous Federal Hill district, “The Arch” has become an icon of the Italian American Community in Providence.  It has appeared on numerous posters, maps and postcards since its construction.

Part of a several block long, multimillion dollar neighborhood revitalization effort, the design theme was established early in meetings with the merchants, property owners and neighbors.  They wanted the neighborhood to speak for itself, to express the Italian-American heritage in art, culture, and economic contributions to America.  The end result was integrated into an overall design that was aesthetically appealing and in keeping with the neighborhood and its heritage.
