post road

The Gateway Project at T.F. Green Airport on Post Road is a major vehicular spine through the City of Warwick, providing critical direct access to the cities’ Intermodal Transportation Facility, which connects Interstate 95, the airport, the new Amtrak and commuter rail station, RIPTA bus service, and a new parking and rental car garage.; The roadway also serves a high concentration of local businesses, restaurants, short-term parking facilities, and hotels existing along both sides of the roadway corridor.  This blend of uses varies greatly along Post Road, as does the level of buffering between pedestrian walkways and adjacent parking areas.  With such a dynamic, multi-use environment in place, a consistently heavy volume of vehicular traffic persists throughout the day and evening hours.

Working closely with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT), WDADG designed a series of streetscape improvements to greatly enhance views along Post Road, while also providing strongly defined edges along the corridor.  The design also provides generous sidewalks to separate pedestrian and vehicular circulation.  The development of a pedestrian-oriented streetscape environment encourages airport patrons to walk from the Airport to the numerous businesses existing along each side of Post Road, thus supporting the local economy.  At the pedestrian level, the design includes new walkways and curbed planters constructed out of durable, low maintenance materials.  The curbed planters were filled with lush perennials and hardy shrubs to provide a visual buffer between sidewalks and adjacent parking areas, to further define the pedestrian corridor, and to enhance the visual appeal of the overall streetscape.  At a greater scale, tall, densely planted shade trees combine with large-scale street lighting to provide strong spatial definition for the four to five-lane wide corridor.  Custom designed and painted “sea foam green”; the impressive light fixtures lining both sides of Post Road provide a unique sense of place and are a strong unifying element for the diverse, multi-use corridor.

Overall, the design produces a visually attractive setting along the Post Road corridor and creates a strong gateway to T.F. Green Airport and the entire Intermodal Transportation Facility District.
