knowles street affordable housing

Working in conjunction with Realty Endeavors for Affordable Community Housing, WDADG provided full landscape architecture and drainage design services for this 9-Unit affordable housing development. Located on the historic East Side of Providence, the existing site presented severe topographical challenges.

The Knowles Street units are carefully constructed into the hillside, along with a series of retaining walls between each duplex, to provide a sustainable solution to the severe slopes. New sidewalks and lawn areas were installed along the frontage of each unit. In addition, the terraces created by the retaining walls were planted with evergreen and flowering shrubs to further beautify the Knowles Street corridor. The use of additional retaining walls along the rear of the site allowed WDADG to create private lawn areas for each unit, while preserving several existing, mature trees. Strategically located drywells were utilized to handle storm water runoff from the adjacent hill and rooftops from the new homes.
